Although I had already been using R to analyze my data, the clear explanations and the practice provided during the workshop helped me solidify my understanding of techniques I hadn’t been using effectively. The workshop is “hands-on” in the best way possible. Raja is clearly dedicated to teaching and has thought through how best to present concepts in statistics and machine learning so that they can immediately become useful tools for data analysis. During the two days of the workshop, he guided us through the process of exploring a dataset, allowing us to learn by making our own discoveries, and then adding insights that extended our learning even further. Raja does not minimize the complexities of exploratory data analysis, but by demonstrating how to look at and think about data, he empowered us to go out and tackle new data analysis problems on our own. I am looking forward to participating in a Kaggle competition with a fellow workshop attendee and a mentor and building on the skills I learned in this workshop. I am already seeing benefits from attending the workshop. I am more confident that I will be able to extract meaning from my research data, and I am eager to get started on this previously daunting task.
