Topics in this module include:
- How to select data for governance

Key Ideas of Data Governance
When your company doesn’t have the needed tools or platform to manage and govern your data, your organizational goals will likely fall flat. These 5 concepts are the key to creating and maintaining a rock-solid data governance system. With the introduction and explanation of each concept we’ll take a deeper, hands-on, investigate one of the most popular data governance tools on the market – Microsoft Purview. During each session we will cover the following key ideas and get hands-on experience exploring these features and actions inside Purview. Topics in this module include:
- Data availability
- Data ownership
- Data usability
- Data security
- Data integrity
Data Availability & Data Usability
Having good data that isn’t available for use and having available data that you don’t have a use for are two boons when it comes to data management. When you can’t use your data it invalidates the entire process used to collect and process that data. And worse yet, it doesn’t allow you to answer critical business questions, fast. During this session we will examine data availability, data usability, and their importance in business. We will also have a hands-on session where we teach you practical ways to ensure this doesn’t happen to your data. Topics in this module include:
- How to scan and register data
- How to create a data map
- How to create data collections
- How to assign an existing classification
- Assigning classifications at both the feature and asset level
- How to create a custom classification
- How to set a classification scan rule.
- How to create glossary terms
- How to assign glossary terms
Data Security & Data Ownership
Having unsecured data is a huge problem in today’s business landscape. Everyday we are seeing more and more companies coming forward with reports of hacks and leaks. These events cast a dark shadow on these companies by damaging their reputation and even result in penalties and fines. One of the reasons that data remains unsecured is because it has no real owner. No one is responsible for the data, no one knows about the sensitivity of it and therefore the data can be mistreated and made vulnerable to a breach. In this session we’ll talk about the problems with unsecured and ownerless data and teach you practical ways to safeguard and assign responsibility. Topics in this module include:
- Understanding how sensitive data is treated in Purview
- Understanding data access levels in Purview
- How to control who has access to the data
- How to control access for an asset
- How to control access for an individual or group
- Assigning owners, stewards, and experts for your data
- How to set approval workflows
- Setting alerts and notifications
Data Integrity
The most common data management mistake that companies make today is using data that they haven’t verified to be accurate. It happens everyday in almost every company, and it is so easy to do. However, just using data without knowing the veracity can lead to very bad business decisions and in some cases, be much worse. Imagine if the management system at a hospital didn’t verify patient records. What kind of trouble do you think that would cause? For that reason, we are going to learn methods and processes for verifying data integrity and we will teach you how to do it practically in this hands-on session. We’ll also cover things like:
- Learn how to certify your data
- Learn how to use classifications for data integrity
- Learn about Purview integrations with other data sources and data tools
- Using classifications to check data quality
- Exploring data lineage
- Learning how data relationships are represented in Purview

Who owns data governance?
One of the reasons that data remains unsecured is because it has no real owner. No one is responsible for the data, no one knows about the sensitivity of it, and therefore the data can be mistreated and rendered useless. In this session we’ll talk about:
- The problem with “ownerless” data
- Practical ways to safeguard your data and assign responsibility
Delivery format: Data access levels in Purview. Assigning owners, stewards, and experts for your data assets. How to create role assignments for data collections
Defining data policies and workflows
The most common data management mistake that companies make today is using data that they haven’t verified to be accurate. It happens every day in almost every company. However, using data without knowing the veracity of that data can lead to bad business decisions and in some cases can lead to decisions that hurt people. In this session we’ll cover topics like:
- The importance of data integrity in data governance
- Data verification methods
Delivery format: Certifying your data assets in Purview. We’ll also cover using classifications for data quality and exploring data lineages in Purview.
How to integrate data from multiple sources
It’s unusually inefficient to combine all of your data into only 1 system, so most companies have many data sources from all different providers. Only governing data from select data sources will likely undermine any of your data governance efforts. So being able to govern data from multiple sources is key to an effective data governance program. During this session we’ll cover topics like:
- Managing multiple data sources with one tool
- Combining data assets from different systems into a single data asset
Delivery format: We’ll explore Azure Data Factory and how it integrates into Purview. We will also examine the Azure Data Share integration in Purview.
Defining success and the path ahead
Simply cataloging your data doesn’t necessarily guarantee success. In order to succeed you need a good governance plan. During this session we’ll discuss:
- Good resources for making a data governance plan
- How to define success for your organization
- Practical next steps for implementing data governance
- Q&A and discussion
