Hear our FAQs explained by David Langer, our own VP of Data Science
Are there any prerequisites?
Nope! While we do recommend having some knowledge of at least one programming/scripting language or computing environment, many of our attendees come to us with little to no experience with programming. Our pre-bootcamp coursework includes tutorials on Introduction to R Programming to get you ramped up for the bootcamp!
The curriculum seems intense, would I be able to handle it?
Our slogan is ‘Data Science for Everyone’. We have created a curriculum that makes data science skills accessible to anyone who is willing to dive right in and learn.
For anything else you should know, we have a series of online tutorials that will prepare you for the bootcamp! Check out the curriculum to see what is covered.
Will I be a good fit for the program?
Our program is specifically designed for working professionals who want to add some data science to their current positions, or who just want to learn what this new field is all about. We focus on teaching the concepts and underlying knowledge needed to do data science, rather than on platform-specific techniques.
Who is your typical attendee?
Our attendees come from diverse backgrounds. They are software developers, program/product managers, management consultants, financial/business/data analysts, academic researchers, geophysicists, geochemists, policy analysts, engineers, statisticians – even veterinarians and medical doctors have successfully completed the bootcamp.
What elements of statistics will I need to know?
We work hard to ensure that no prior statistics knowledge is required. We will teach you all the basics you need to know before and during the bootcamps.
What software/technology stacks do you use?
While we do work in R and Python during the training, knowledge of any programming language will work- as we teach the principles from a “software agnostic” point of view, the principles transfer across programming languages. We teach how to interpret data, and then how to apply machine learning to take that to the next level.
Bootcamps are held Monday through Friday from 8am to 6pm. It’s 5 days of in-person, hands-on learning for 10 hours a day.
How many people attend each training?
Class sizes range from 20 to 30 people.
Will I need to bring my own laptop computer?
Yes. Any Linux, Mac, or PC will work as long as you can download the software required to complete the bootcamp. We require that you download R and Rstudio and create an Azure 30-day free trial account with administrative access rights. We also require that you install a text editor of your choice; either Notepad ++ or Sublime Text 3 will work.
Who teaches the bootcamps?
Our core Seattle-based teaching team travels to each location. At least two instructors will be there to guide you through getting started with data science.
Will I get a certificate after completion?
Yes! Once you have completed our 5-day training, you will be issued a certificate that you can print or add to your LinkedIn profile for others to see.
Note: the certificate does not represent official academic credit.
Does this count towards Continuing Professional Education credits for a Certified Public Accountant?
Yes! We have had several accountants take our bootcamp for this purpose.
What language is the bootcamp taught in?
The bootcamp is taught in English.
What services do you offer after the bootcamp/workshop?
Help with Kaggle competitions
Access to your cohort’s Slack group which never expires, so you can stay in touch with your peers after the bootcamp!
How do I register? Is there an application process?
We don’t have an application process, so all you have to do is register!
Check the schedule to see if there is bootcamp near you.
Select the bootcamp you would like to attend.
View “pricing” to see our different package offerings.
Click register and pay. It’s that easy!
None of the locations work for me. What do I do?
We’re constantly adding more bootcamps to our schedule.
If you want to attend a training in a particular city that is not yet scheduled, please go to the schedule and click “notify me” next to the city. Provide your name and email address, and when a bootcamp is scheduled in that city, we’ll let you know.
Where can I find more details on your packages?
You can find a document that lays out all our packages here.
What currency are prices in?
Prices are listed in USD, unless otherwise posted.
What is the cost of the course and materials?
The cost of the bootcamp depends on the location, package, and if there are any discounts at the time.
At this time, we offer three bootcamp packages: Dojo, Guru, and Sensei.
To view pricing for these packages, select the location you would like to attend, and view “pricing”.
We offer both early registration and group discounts (which can be combined).
Do you offer early bird discounts for workshops?
Yes, we do offer early-bird discounts for our trainings. All of our discounts are available in limited quantities and are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once we sell out of our discounted seats, we move to full price.
How do your early bird and group discounts work?
Early-bird discounts depend on variety of factors such as the number of seats left in the bootcamp and how many weeks in advance the registration happens. Typically, registrations happening 4+ weeks prior to the bootcamp date are eligible for the discount.
The group discount is 5% and applies to groups of 4 or more attendees who register and pay together. This discount can be also be combined with an early-bird discount when available.
You can also combine early-bird discounts with the flexible payment plan.
What forms of payment do you accept?
You can pay by credit card, bank transfer, PayPal or check. If your company is paying for your training, we can send you an invoice.
If your desired payment method is not listed, please contact us.
What is the refund policy?
If for any reason, you decide to cancel, we will gladly refund your registration fee in full if notified the Monday prior to the start of the training. We would also be happy to transfer your registration to another bootcamp or workshop.
Do you offer discounts for students and non-profit employees?
We only offer fellowships to exceptional non-profit employees. Please apply here.
At Data Science Dojo, we believe that the ‘Become a Data Scientist‘ slogan used by many companies is inherently flawed.
We approach data science teaching from a professional development, and not necessarily a career change perspective. In just five days, we will teach you enough data science to be able to start solving real-world problems.
Our focus is on developing professional skills, not job placement. However, you will have great networking opportunities at the bootcamp. Our attendees work in the industry and you will have a week to get to know them well.
